Learning to deal with radical views
Objective
In German they use the term “Stammtischparolen” when talking about poorly nuanced and outspoken views on themes that can quickly polarize debate and are met with great resistance. For example, the “black Pete” discussion or European (im)migration and climate policies. In the argumentation training, we do not seek to point out flaws in the other persons views or opinions with dry-cut arguments and opinions. The point of the argumentation training is the manner in which you pay attention to the different point of view. What preconceptions are there and what are the mechanisms behind them? What views do you hold and how do you respond to racist remarks? Do you exaggerate the point of view and make a caricature out of it? Do you ignore it? Or, do you engage in conversation with others and take it seriously?
